Ever notice how people are waiting longer to get married (a good thing) but that the conservative JC (JudeoChristian) crowd keeps touting abstinence as the only solution? A few days ago I heard Michael Medved take on the issues of abstinence education and gay marriage in the space of one week. Time passed and my thoughts congealed until finally it hit me how the two topics were really the same beast in disguise.
I suppose I should back up here: I'm all for teaching kids to wait until marriage as long as we recognize that the height of the human sex drive occurs before maturity sets in. This is either a great reality TV show (and hilarious joke) directed by god or it's one of natures little safety nets.
The absurdity of the abstinence only anti common sense crowd really jumps out at you when you consider the never-in-a-million-years stance that the conservative JC folks have taken on Gay Marriage. Yes there is a thinly veiled acceptance of homosexuality among the population - the veil just barely hiding homophobia, the Old Testament and the "It's a choice you sick freak" mob. Somehow we can associate the most outrageous Gay Pride Parade behavior as the norm for our beloved deviants but see any connection with the multi-billion dollar straight porn industry, or the Girls Gone Wild videos, or Mardi Gras, Spring Break, our college years or anything denoting heterosexuality. That thin social veil covers an immense glacier of human hatred for "The Other" that is best exhibited in riots, lynchings and the rape and pillage of Thomas Kincaid’s peaceful little villages.
The veil brilliantly masks this gross evil with the barest whiff of acceptance and a good deal of social backlash, teeth gnashing and moral demagoguery that has been brought to a pus filled head in the issue of gay marriage which will, if I read it Rightly, bring about the end of civilization and, generally, the world as we know it. That’s a lot to hang on the well coiffed heads of homos everywhere but it begins to stink like dead fish when you consider that these moral crusaders are not only against gay marriage but also demand abstinence only until marriage education – marriage, like acceptance, being the one thing society denies to homosexuals.
I’ve heard Medved explain this by saying that yes, homosexuals can get married to anyone they want as long as they are the opposite sex. He also argues that marriage is based on procreation and then goes on to make several exceptions for infertile couples and senior citizens without missing a beat or finding a clue. If backed into the corner JC conservatives will wave statistics (‘there aren’t that many of them’), present Rome (‘they fell because they were too gay to fight’) or embellish the cultish brainwashing of former gays by religious organizations. Nice.
So either we start teaching our kids about abstinence along with safe sex techniques and promote monogamy for everyone – gays included – or we risk losing both our tenuous grip on logic and generations of our children in the process.
